A good sign is an investment. With a little care, it keeps working for your business for years. Here’s how to protect it, especially under Sydney’s strong sun, storms and coastal air.

1. Clean it regularly

Dust, pollution and bird droppings build up and dull your sign. Every few months, gently wash it with mild soapy water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive pads and high-pressure hoses, which can scratch acrylic or lift vinyl.

2. Check the lighting

For illuminated signs, one dead light makes the whole sign look neglected. Check it after dark every few weeks. If you still have old fluorescent tubes, consider upgrading to LED, which uses less power and lasts longer.

3. Watch for fading and peeling

UV light slowly fades colours and can make vinyl crack or peel at the edges. Catching this early often means a quick touch-up instead of a full replacement.

4. Inspect the fixings

After storms and strong winds, take a look for loose brackets, rust stains or a sign that’s no longer sitting straight. Loose signage can be a safety hazard, so don’t climb up to fix it yourself. Call a professional.

5. Keep it clear

Trim trees and remove anything blocking your sign. A sign customers can’t see isn’t doing its job.

When is it time to replace it?

The colours are badly faded or the text is hard to read

Parts are cracked, rusted or water is getting in

Your branding, logo or phone number has changed

It simply looks dated next to your competitors

Thinking about a new one? Our guide on choosing the right shop sign is a good place to start.

Traditional glass neon or modern LED? A simple comparison of look, running costs, durability and safety to help you choose.

The post LED vs Neon Signs: Which Is Right for Your Business? appeared first on Snip Signs.

Nothing grabs attention after dark like a glowing sign. But should you go with traditional glass neon, or modern LED? Here’s how they compare.

Traditional glass neon

Classic neon uses glass tubes, hand-bent by skilled craftspeople and filled with gas that glows when high voltage runs through it.

Look: a warm, all-round glow with a genuine retro character

Running costs: uses more power than LED

Durability: glass is fragile and can break if knocked or during transport

Safety: runs on high voltage, so it needs careful installation and placement

Repairs: broken tubes need a specialist to re-bend and refill

LED signs (including LED neon)

LED signs use light-emitting diodes. “LED neon” or “neon flex” places LEDs inside a flexible silicone tube to recreate the neon look.

Look: bright, even light in almost any colour, including a very convincing neon style

Running costs: uses much less energy than glass neon

Durability: flexible and shatter-resistant, so better for busy spaces

Safety: runs at low voltage and stays cool to the touch

Options: can be dimmable, colour-changing or on a timer

Which should you choose?

For most businesses, LED is the practical choice: cheaper to run, tougher and safer, while still giving that eye-catching glow. Glass neon suits businesses that want an authentic vintage look and are happy with more care and higher running costs.

LED also works beyond neon-style lettering: lightboxes, channel letters and illuminated 3D letters all use it.

Planning an outdoor lit sign? Lit signs often have extra rules. Read our guide: Do you need council approval for a business sign in NSW?

Before a new sign goes up, it’s worth knowing whether you need approval. In NSW, some business signs can be installed without council approval, while others need a development application (DA). Getting it right early avoids delays, fines or having to take a sign down.

Some signs are “exempt development”

NSW has a state planning policy, the State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008, often called the Codes SEPP. It sets out types of minor work, including certain business identification signs, that can go ahead without a DA as long as they meet specific standards.

Those standards typically cover things like:

Size: exempt signs must stay within a maximum area, which depends on the zone.

How it’s mounted: for example, fixed flat against a wall and not sticking out past the building.

Number of signs: limits can apply to how many signs one business has.

Lighting: illuminated signs usually can’t flash, move or be animated, and may have limits on brightness and hours.

Safety: the sign must be securely fixed and built to handle wind loads.

When you’re likely to need a DA

The sign is larger than the exempt limits allow

The property is a heritage item or in a heritage conservation area, where exemptions generally don’t apply

It’s a pylon, rooftop or free-standing sign

It’s animated, flashing or a digital screen facing the street

It’s an advertising sign promoting something other than the business on site

Every council also has its own local plans and rules, so the answer can differ between suburbs.

Don’t forget your landlord and strata

Even when council approval isn’t needed, most leases and strata by-laws require written approval before signs go on a building. Check your lease early, as landlords often have their own design rules.

How to check

Look up your property on the NSW Planning Portal to see its zone and any heritage listing.

Call your local council’s duty planner. They can tell you whether your sign is likely to need approval.

Get written approval from your landlord or strata if you lease or share the building.

This guide is general information, not legal or planning advice. Rules change and depend on your property, so always confirm with your council.

We’ll help you get it right

At Snip SIGNS, we design signs with size, placement and lighting rules in mind, and we’re happy to talk through what’s likely to apply to your site. See our shop front signs and sign installation services, or call 0433 466 694 for a free quote.

Vehicle Wraps vs Magnetic Signs: Which Is Right for Your Business?

Wrap or magnet? A plain-English comparison to help tradies and small businesses choose the right vehicle signage.

Your work vehicle goes everywhere your customers are, which makes it one of the best advertising spaces you own. The two most popular options are vehicle wraps and magnetic signs. Here’s how they compare.

Vehicle wraps

A wrap is printed vinyl applied directly to your vehicle. It can cover the whole vehicle (full wrap) or just part of it (partial wrap or decals).

Best for: businesses that use a dedicated work vehicle and want maximum impact.

Looks professional and eye-catching

Room for bold designs, photos and your full branding

Stays on through washes and daily driving

Can help protect the original paint underneath

Higher upfront cost than magnets

Magnetic signs

Magnetic signs are printed panels that stick to flat steel panels on your vehicle, usually the doors.

Best for: people who also use the vehicle privately, or who are just starting out.

Lower cost

Take them off in seconds for weekends or private use

Easy to update when your details change

Smaller space, so less visual impact

Only work on flat metal panels, not aluminium, fibreglass or curved areas

Should be removed and cleaned regularly to protect your paint

Which should you choose?

If your vehicle is used mainly for work and you want to make a strong impression, a wrap is usually the better long-term investment. If you need flexibility or want to start on a smaller budget, magnetic signs are a practical option. Many businesses start with magnets and move to a wrap as they grow.

You can also combine them: a partial wrap with your logo and colours, plus vinyl lettering for your phone number and website.

A practical guide to picking a shop sign that gets noticed: sign types, materials, lighting and what to think about before you order.

The post How to Choose the Right Shop Sign for Your Sydney Business appeared first on Snip Signs.

Your shop sign is often the first thing a customer sees. A good one tells people who you are, what you do and that you’re open, all in a few seconds. Here’s what to think about before you order.

1. Start with where people will see it

Think about how customers approach your shop. Are they walking past on the footpath, driving by, or looking up from across the street? This decides the size, height and type of sign you need.

Foot traffic: window lettering, A-frame signs and under-awning signs work well at eye level.

Passing cars: larger fascia signs, flags and bold, simple wording are easier to read at speed.

Across the street: high-contrast colours and 3D lettering stand out from a distance.

2. Keep the message simple

Most people only glance at a sign. Your business name and what you do are usually enough. Save phone numbers, opening hours and long lists of services for window graphics or a door sign, where people have time to read.

3. Choose the right sign type

Fascia and awning signs: the main sign above your shopfront. See our shop front signs.

3D and fabricated letters: a premium, dimensional look for your name or logo.

Illuminated signs: LED, neon and lightbox signs keep you visible after dark, which matters if you trade into the evening.

Window graphics: vinyl lettering and one way vision turn glass into advertising space.

4. Match your brand

Use the same logo, colours and fonts as your cards, vehicles and website. A consistent look makes your business easier to remember and looks more professional. If you don’t have a logo yet, we can help with logo design too.

5. Think about durability

Outdoor signs in Sydney deal with strong sun, rain and wind. Ask about materials and finishes that resist fading and weather, so your sign still looks sharp years from now, not just months.

6. Check approvals before you install

Some signs need approval from your landlord, strata or local council, depending on the size, location and whether it’s lit. It’s worth checking early so there are no delays.
